Data Talks
The New York Times provides infographics with data on current events and other important topics with the aim of increasing data and mathematical literacy.
These are amazing to use in the classroom as a sort of warm-up or non-content activity, ALTHOUGH many of the graphs that The New York Times provides could certainly be applied to content standards or objectives.
For me, I focus on how students are exhibiting the mathematical practice standards (argumentation, justification, abstract and quantitative thinking, etc.) This is also a wonderful activity to bring up the idea of empathy and recognizing different perspectives. My favorite question to ask is "How does this affect you and your community?"
